The economy ... our society --- really what is up with taxation and costs and payments for such important things as education and roads and safety. The rich can take care of those things themselves (private schools, personal drivers, pilots, etc. and private security). AND when they pay for those things they have no incentive to pay fairly into the community pot for others. Really - they are not using those basics! Same goes for some not so rich when it comes to schools. Private schools blossomed, I think, in relation to racism and again the general public doesn't see why they should pay for something they are not using!
So - simply put - taxation is currently too low to support important aspects of our society and that IS rational from the point of view of those who pay little and who are rich enough to not be concerned. The rich can take care of themselves and everybody wants to take care of themselves and few really want to take care of others. And so here we are!
