Yesterday's post was just posted... since it had some critical stuff and I hesitated... but in the end --- truths out... One thing unsaid yesterday is that after hearing all Debbie's activities and accomplishments I thought - what have I done... so here is some of that:
lots of work before becoming a professional librarian - Fuller brush door to door, stock person and cashier at a supermarket, dish washer and food filler at college cafeteria, NYC taxi driver, US Post Office delivery man....
School were SUNY Binghamton (BS), CUNY Queens (one summer), SUNY Albany (MLS).
Professional jobs as librarian with some accomplishments:
Public Library - Jersey City --- held the line to keep branch open after it had changed service populations from white to black; encouraged/allowed/monitored special uses of the buildings facilities such as dances on 2nd floor, a community service office on the 2nd floor, re-opened the big auditorium in basement and held several talent shows and showed movies (popular and educational...), encouraged staff to do their best -- and one later became the head of the entire system!!!
Special library for NYState Agency for Drug/Substane abuse ... learned computerized searching and how to ship AV around the state and distributed prevention materials around the state...
AND FINALLY - worked for about 30 years at the UC Davis General Library. Did computer searching immediately. Trained staff in the use of the early micro computers. Used a mini-computer to compile and publish a bibliography about Appropriate Technology using the appropriate technology of the mini-computer. Initated the re-opening of the Library on Picnic Day with the very able help of a colleague. This reopening was something I was very proud of... it highlighted the library and met our sense the library was the center beating heart of the University. Taught faculty, students, and staff how to use the many resources of the library especially the new computer-based programs and resources. More???
In my personal life...
husband, father... very important. Boy friend, too.
AND - at the local jewish center -- lots of roles especially that of amateur cantor for over 30 years on the bimah at High Holidays as well as leading many shabbat services and served as gabbai at many services and bnai mitvahs. Also organized their library professionally and served on the Board of Directors and was President of that Board one year.
Also was in several choirs over the course of my life. Bayside HS, the NYC All-City Chorus - under the direction one year of Peter J. Wilhowsky and one year under his protigee John Moore. After a long break - sang with the UC Davis Chorus and the Sacramento Choral Society and then back with UCDavis and now also the Davis Chorale. I am a 2nd Bass - lowest of the low!
Volunteer work has included driving for the Yolo Food Bank and for Meals on Wheels. I volunteer with Yolo Cares - once Yolo Hospice .. visiting people ... some who are seriously on hospice and others who need companionship or whose care takers need respite. Very rewarding these visits.
SO - I GUESS I, TOO, HAVE HAD A FULL LIFE... Which included a lot of travel worldwide and in the US, too.
