Does history repeat itself... YES... Do we LEARN from history -- YES... however - while we might want to learn what not to do that was done in the past.... I fear what we do is look at the past and see things we then repeat now ... to get them right, finally... OR to just do them since they were things we supported, liked, served us...
SO - the military studies past battles... so to repeat them today as they worked back then...
SO - with new technologies... such as drones... the past doesn't provide us with a blueprint.. HOWEVER -- these days of using "new technologies" and strategies... with drones and other things reminds me of the TESTING of new ways of war during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's.. In the 1930's the use of airpower was introduced... and while it may be similar to long distance artillary .. it was different and more effective. TODAY - how are drones like other things from the past? IF we can determine that similarity then we might come up with best practices for responding ... OR maybe it is just a matter of using them as they are being used. NOTE: drones were first...?? apparently used by the US Military to hit small distant targets. Those drones were guided by personnel via cameras... and now the drones are more autonomous.
THE WORRY - will weapons overcome their handlers?
Back to REPEATING History -- we didn't learn enough from the Vietnam War nor the Russian trial in Afghanistan... AND NOW -- what can be done about Iran? Will there be boots put on the ground? It is ALWAYS THE INFANTRY that carries the basic load... they say. Will we allow Trump to put American troops on the ground in Iran????? Doubtful... but he is not controlled or controllable....OY!!!!
