The Parable from Language in thought and action by S.I. Hayakawa



A Semantic Parable 

Once upon a time (said the Professor), there were two small 
communities, spiritually as well as geographically situated at a con- 
siderable distance from each other. They had, however, these prob- 
lems in common: Both were hard hit by a depression, so that in 
each of the towns there were about one hundred heads of families 
unemployed. There was, to be sure, enough food, enough clothing, 
enough materials for housing, but these families simply did not 
have money to procure these necessities. 


The city fathers of A-town, the first community, were substantial 
businessmen, moderately well educated, good to their families, kind- 
hearted, and* sound-thinking. The unemployed tried hard, as un- 
employed people usually do, to find jobs; but the situation did not 
improve. The city fathers, as well as the unemployed themselves, 
had been brought up to believe that there is always enough work 
for everyone, if you only look for it hard enough. Comforting them- 
selves with this doctrine, the city fathers could have shrugged their 
shoulders and turned their backs on the problem, except for the 
fact that they were genuinely kindhearted men. They could not 
bear to see the unemployed men and their wives and children starv- 
ing. In order to prevent starvation, they felt that they had to provide 
these people with some means of sustenance. Their principles told 
them, nevertheless, that if people were given something for nothing, 
it would demoralize their character. Naturally this made the city 
fathers#even more unhappy, because they were faced with the hor- 
rible choice of (i) letting the unemployed starve, or (2) destroying 
their moral character. 


The solution they finally hit upon, after much debate and soul- 
searching, was this. They decided to give the unemployed families 
relief of fifty dollars a month; but to insure against the pauperiza- 
tion of the recipients, they decided that this fifty dollars was to be 
accompanied by a moral lesson, to wit: the obtaining of the assist-

ance would be made so difficult, humiliating, and disagreeable that 
there would be no temptation for anyone to go through the process 
unless it was absolutely necessary; the moral disapproval of the 
community would be turned upon the recipients of the money at 
all times in such a way that they would try hard to get of? relief 
and regain their self-respect. Some even proposed that people on 
relief be denied the vote, so that the moral lesson would be more 
deeply impressed upon them. Others suggested that their names be 
published at regular intervals in the newspapers, so that there would 
be a strong incentive to get off relief. The city fathers had enough 
faith in the goodness of human nature to expect that the recipients 
would be grateful, since they were getting something for nothing, 
something which they hadn’t worked for. 


When the plan was put into operation, however, the recipients 
of the relief checks proved to be an ungrateful, ugly bunch. They 
seemed to resent the cross-examinations and inspections at the hands 
of the relief investigators, who, they said, took advantage of a man’s 
misery to snoop into every detail of his private life. In spite of uplift- 
ing editorials in A-town Tribune telling them how grateful they 
ought to be, the recipients of the relief refused to learn any moral 
lessons, declaring that they were “just as good as anybody else.” 
When, for example, they permitted themselves the rare luxury of 
a movie or an evening of bingo, their neighbors looked at them 
sourly as if to say, “I work hard and pay my taxes just in order to 
support loafers like you in idleness and pleasure.” This attitude, 
which was fairly characteristic of those members of the community 
who still had jobs, further embittered the relief recipients, so that 
they showed even less gratitude as time went on and were con- 
stantly on the lookout for insults, real or imaginary, from people 
who might think that they weren’t as good as anybody else.* A num- 
ber of them took to moping all day long, to thinking that their 
lives had been failures; one or two even committed suicide. Others 
found that it was hard to look their wives and kiddies in the face, 
because they had failed to provide. They all found it difficult to 
maintain their club and fraternal relationships, since they could 
not help feeling that their fellow citizens despised them for having 
sunk so low. Their wives, too, were unhappy for the same reasons

and gave up their social activities. Children whose parents were on 
relief felt inferior to classmates whose parents were not public 
charges. Some of these children developed inferiority complexes 
which affected not only their grades at school, but their careers after 
graduation. Several other relief recipients, finally, felt they could 
stand their loss of self-respect no longer and decided, after many 
efforts to gain honest jobs, to earn money by their own efforts, 
even if they had to go in for robbery. They did so and were caught 
and sent to the state penitentiary. 


The depression, therefore, hit A-town very hard. The relief policy 
had averted starvation, no doubt, but suicide, personal quarrels, un- 
happy homes, the weakening of social organizations, the maladjust- 
ment of children, and, finally, crime, had resulted. The town was 
divided in two, the “haves” and the “have-nots,” so that there was 
class hatred. People shook their heads sadly and declared that it all 
went to prove over again what they had known from the beginning, 
that giving people something for nothing inevitably demoralizes 
their character. The citizens of A-town gloomily waited for prosper- 
ity to return, with less and less hope as time went on. 


The story of the other community, B-ville, was entirely different. 
B-ville was a relatively isolated town, too far out of the way to be 
reached by Rotary Club speakers and university extension services. 
One of the aldermen, however, who was something of an economist, 
explained to his fellow aldermen that unemployment, like sickness, 
accident, fire, tornado, or death, hits unexpectedly in modern society, 
irrespective of the victim’s merits or deserts. He went on to say that 
B-ville’s homes, parks, streets, industries, and everything else B-ville 
was proud of had been built in part by the work of these same 
people who were now unemployed. He then proposed to apply a 
principle of insurance: If the work these unemployed people had 
previously done for the community could be regarded as a form of 
premium paid to the community against a time of misfortune, pay- 
ments now made to them to prevent their starvation could be re- 
garded as insurance claims. He therefore proposed that all men of 
good repute who had worked in the community in whatever line 
of useful endeavor, whether as machinists, clerks, or bank managers, 
be regarded as citizen policyholders, having claims against the city

in the case of unemployment for fifty dollars a month until such 
time as they might again be employed. Naturally, he had to talk 
very slowly and patiently, since the idea was entirely new to his 
fellow aldermen. But he described his plan as a “straight business 
proposition,” and finally they were persuaded. They worked out 
the details as to the conditions under which citizens should be re- 
garded as policyholders in the city’s social insurance plan to every- 
body’s satisfaction and decided to give checks for fifty dollars a 
month to the heads of each of B-ville’s indigent families. 


B-ville’s claim adjusters, whose duty it was to investigate the 
claims of the citizen policyholders, had a much better time than 
A-town’s relief investigators. While the latter had been resentfully 
regarded as snoopers, the former, having no moral lesson to teach 
but simply a business transaction to carry out, treated their clients 
with businesslike courtesy and got the same amount of information 
as the relief investigators with considerably less difficulty. There 
were no hard feelings. It further happened, fortunately, that news 
of B-ville’s plans reached a liberal newspaper editor in the big city 
at the other end of the state. This writer described the plan in a 
leading feature story headed “B-VILLE LOOKS AHEAD. Great 
Adventure in Social Pioneering Launched by Upper Valley Com- 
munity.” As a result of this publicity, inquiries about the plan began 
to come to the city hall even before the first checks were mailed out. 
This led, naturally, to a considerable feeling of pride on the part of 
the aldermen, who, being boosters, felt that this was a wonderful op- 
portunity to put B-ville on the map. 


Accordingly, the aldermen decided that instead of simply mailing 
out the checks as they had originally intended, they would publicly 
present the first checks at a monster civic ceremony. They invited 
the governor of the state, who was glad to come to bolster J>is none- 
too-enthusiastic support in that locality, the president of the state 
university, the senator from their district, and other functionaries. 
They decorated the National Guard armory with flags and got out 
the American Legion Fife and Drum Corps, the Boy Scouts, and 
other civic organizations. At the big celebration, each family to re- 
ceive a social insurance check was marched up to the platform to 
receive it, and the governor and the mayor shook hands with each

of them as they came trooping up in their best clothes. Fine speeches 
were made; there was much cheering and shouting; pictures of the 
event showing the recipients of the checks shaking hands with the 
mayor, and the governor patting the heads of the children, were 
published not only in the local papers but also in several metro- 
politan picture sections. 


Every recipient of these insurance checks had a feeling, therefore, 
that he had been personally honored, that he lived in a wonderful 
little town, and that he could face his unemployment with greater 
courage and assurance, since his community was back of him. The 
men and women found themselves being kidded in a friendly way 
by their acquaintances for having been “up there with the big 
shots,” shaking hands with the governor, and so on. The children 
at school found themselves envied for having had their pictures in 
the papers. All in all, B-ville’s unemployed did not commit suicide, 
were not haunted by a sense of failure, did not turn to crime, did 
not get personal maladjustments, did not develop class hatred, as 
the result of their fifty dollars a month. . . . 


At the conclusion of the Professor’s story, the discussion began: 


“That just goes to show,” said the Advertising Man, who was 
known among his friends as a realistic thinker, “what good promo- 
tional work can do. B-ville’s city council had real advertising sense, 
and that civic ceremony was a masterpiece . . . made everyone 
happy . . . put over the scheme in a big way. Reminds me of the 
way we do things in our business: as soon as we called horse- 
mackerel tuna-fish, we developed a big market for it. I suppose if 
you called relief ‘insurance,’ you could actually get people to like 
it, couldn’t you?” 


“WJiat do you mean, ‘calling’ it insurance?” asked the Social 
Worker. “B-ville’s scheme wasn’t relief at all. It was insurance. 
That’s what all such payments should be. What gets me is the 
stupidity of A-town’s city council and all people like them in not 
realizing that what they call ‘relief’ is simply the payment of just 
claims which those unemployed have on a community in a complex 
interdependent industrial society.” 


“Good grief, man! Do you realize what you’re saying?” cried the

Advertising Man in surprise. “Are you implying that those people 
had any right to that money ? All I said was that it’s a good idea to 
disguise relief as insurance if it’s going to make people any happier. 
But it’s still relief, no matter what you call it. It’s all right to kid 
the public along to reduce discontent, but we don’t need to kid 
ourselves as well!” 


“But they do have a right to that money! They’re not getting 
something for nothing. It’s insurance. They did something for the 
community, and that’s their prem — ” 


“Say, are you crazy?” 


“Who’s crazy?” 


“You’re crazy. Relief is relief, isn’t it? If you’d only call things 
by their right names . . 


“But, confound it, insurance is insurance, isn’t it?” 


(Since the gentlemen are obviously losing their tempers, it will be 
best to leave them. The Professor has already sneaked out. When 
last heard of, not only had the quarrelers stopped speaking to each 
other, but so had their wives — and the Advertising Man was threat- 
ening to disinherit his son if he didn’t break off his engagement 
with the Social Worker’s daughter.) 


This story has been told not to advance arguments in favor of 
“social insurance” or “relief” or for any other political and economic 
arrangement, but simply to show a fairly characteristic sample of 
language in action. Do the words we use make as much difference 
in our lives as the story of A-town and B-ville seems to indicate? 
We often talk about “choosing the right words to express our 
thoughts,” as if thinking were a process entirely independent of the 
words we think in. But is thinking such an independent process? 
Do the words we utter arise as a result of the thoughts we l^tve, or 
are the thoughts we have determined by the linguistic systems we 
happen to have been taught? The Advertising Man and the Social 
Worker seem to be agreed that the results of B-ville’s program were 
good, so that we can assume that their notions of what is socially 
desirable are similar. Nevertheless, they cannot agree . 


Alfred Korzybski, in his preface to Science and Sanity (which 
discusses many problems similar to those discussed in this book).

asks the reader to imagine what the state of technology would be if 
all lubricants contained emery dust, the presence of which had 
never been detected. Machines would be short-lived and expensive; 
the machine age would be a dream of the distant future. If, how- 
ever, someone were to discover the presence of the emery, we should 
at once know in what direction to proceed in order to release the 
potentialities of machine power. 


Why do people disagree? It isn’t a matter of education or in- 
telligence, because quarreling, bitterness, conflict, and breakdown 
are just as common among the educated as the uneducated, among 
the clever as the stupid. Human relations are no better among the 
privileged than the underprivileged. Indeed, well-educated people 
are often the cleverest in proving that insurance is really insurance 
and that relief is really relief — and being well educated they often 
have such high principles that nothing will make them modify their 
position in the slightest. Are disagreements then the inevitable re- 
sults of the nature of human problems and the nature of man? Pos- 
sibly so — but if we give this answer, we are confessing to being 
licked before we have even started our investigations. 


The student of language observes, however, that it is an extremely 
rare quarrel that does not involve some kind of talking . Almost 
invariably, before noses are punched or shooting begins, words are 
exchanged — sometimes only a few, sometimes millions. We shall, 
therefore, look for the “previously undetected emery dust” (or 
whatever it is that heats up and stops our intellectual machinery) 
in language — that is to say, our linguistic habits (how we talk and 
think and listen) and our unconscious attitudes toward language . 
If we are even partially successful in our search, we may get an 
inkling of the direction in which to proceed in order to release the 
now imperfectly realized potentialities of human co-operation. 


P.S. Those who have concluded that the point of the story is that 
the Social Worker and the Advertising Man were “only arguing 
about different names for the same thing,” are asked to reread the 
story and explain what they mean by (i) “only” and (2) “the same 
thing.” 



Virus Day 11

To be sure... I have had several tequila sunrise's... and am feeling no/little pain. What was nice was a zoom cocktail hour with daughters, Deanne, Susan Hildreth, and Susna  Rosenthal thus getting together coast to coast.

The NY folks are much more impacted now, I think, then we are in California. Something has happened and an explosion of reported cases of The Virus are in NYC. Very scary.

Also today -- a big talk with Deanne about stuff about us... Some repetition... some talk talk... and maybe there will be some changes. Time will tell and again.. I am hopefully waiting and scared, too. I mean what if I get what I want??? Really...  So - I am crazy and I MUST become Satiated if I get what I want... as in the Brin four-points of modern sanity. So while crazy I want to be sane. Which is crazy...

I have been getting informed by a work by Alan Watts - This is it. A very interesting book from somewhat early in his work, I think. Way before drugs. Way INTO Zen. Very interesting. And useful and instructive for THESE times of The Virus. 

And I must get a copy of the two short essays at the beginning of the book Language in thought and action by S./I. Hayakawa which was essentially an executive summary of the Korzibzki book: Science and Sanity.  See the parable in the next post... The Parable... It is very important TODAY!

Virus - Day 10

(started yesterday)
Perfection came to mind yesterday... but as there was a lot going on in my posts yesterday I put this thought off til now... Perfection is, imho, a transitory momentary thing. Relative to Biden picking a perfect candidate... no way that holds for long. Getting a good, very good... person is possible. Such a person can easily be a women!

Perfection relative to The Virus -- and locking down, etc ... I AM DOING MY BEST...  Being chided all the time is simply painful and stressful. Some positive stuff needs saying and doing. Encouragement is important with love and compassion. We all must be BOTH selfish and serving. There is a delicate balance, I believe, that makes us humans as we act with humanity. Firemen rush INTO burning buildings. We all cannot only hide in our rooms and homes. There is a community around us and people need help and only people can be helpful. Carefully!! And really. I find myself talking positive positive positive as so many around me worry worry worry. I can use some help balancing things since I cannot do it all myself. Foolish optimism is not good. Foolish pessimism is also not good. As is now on my email signature and was in yesterday's blog:

Virus - Day 9 (there is hope in this post)

This "day" dating is when I began to try to write each day and as noted in some posts -- I have missed certain days. Sorry.

Today is Day 9, Tuesday, March 24, 2020... and a visit with my hospice person is postponed again ... til it is warmer and safer. I hope to "zoom" or something with him and/or his wife so as to maintain some connection.

I asked my therapist if she is using zoom for a session ... I think a session could be useful.

I must note, relative to some zoom sessions/classes I have taken -- a teacher is good or bad or whatever no matter if in person or on zoom. Knowledge and how they talk to or with or at you doesn't change. Not surprising.

It is about 9:15am --- and I am breaking off this writing to look into using skype... Valerie/Michael seem able to do that. Later.......

Virus - Day 8 - Monday, March 23, 2020

(this will probably be written in several points in time)

Part 1
This morning, Monday, I have spoken with Amy and sent her and Sarah an email about how I AM being careful... as well as helpful to some others. It is a difficult balancing act... between absolute isolation and some contact with other... even in person. ALSO - just checked how stock market is doing and the collapse continues.

Outside the day looks beautiful here in Davis, California. It may be a bit "cold" (48 degrees F) but that is really fine. Refreshing.

I'm at Deanne's house and have not figured out what I will do later... though at 1pm I have a zoom meeting to go to with legacy writing group. Not much else on the calendar. Tomorrow I wonder if Adriana and crew will clean my house. I have sent them a note asking them if they come to do disinfecting and to be healthful, personally.

Part 2
So... I am at my Breton home now - it is about 11:30 and I have been here an hour or so. Shirley is here, too... AOK...
NOTE: this is a bit like, in its way, giving blood. It is easy. Risky, too, a bit. Blood donations can go
"wrong" and illness can come in with a visitor... BUT all things necessary and all things good and all things rather easy, too.

And --- went to bank and got some cash to stache. A good idea?

Also put away some stuff on dining room table and kitchen counters. Folded laundry, etc. I WONDER if Adrianna will come tomorrow?

Today I expect to do two zooms - one with legacy writing group and the other with Susan in NYC = her Bible class.

Amy and Susan are both working from home which is Susan's apartment. They are together. Sarah and her mom, Susan, are also together and I think Sarah is working from home. Deanne is working from home. AOK.

BILLS need paying!! as in my car insurance!!! - DONE... at least car insurance.

Virus - DayS 5, 6, and 7

On Day 5 - Friday, Deanne and I had our Shabbat dinner. Nice and calm and restful and peaceful. These are times to relax and breathe and savor food and life and all. I was the challah maker this time and I slightly overcooked the challah but they were good and big. Nice. Dinner was smoked beef Deanne has made with roasted veggies. Good.

Went off to sleep earlyish and got good rest.

On Day 6 - Saturday - we had talked and made arrangements for Fern and Arnie to come over for drinks and dinner. We all followed distancing and elbow bumping. Arnie brought a cocktail down... an american version of a negroni. Instead of gin... it used boubon and they Makers Mark bourbon he used had been soaking up flavor for a month from dates. A bit sweeter, therefore.

Dinner was nice. We will see them again, maybe in Davis, or sometime next year??? - in Philadelphia to where they are moving. Their kids live in that area.

On Day 7 0 Sunday - Deanne and I went shopping in the morning. To several places with the primary goal being to find bread flour..We didn't find any bread flour but finally did score a 25 pound bag of all-purpose flour which will do for challahs and other stuff (pies, cookies, etc).

I mostly drove and staying the car or when I went into a store (I had to see how stocks were ..) I kept away from people but Deanne would have preferred I staying in the car... I did when we got to Walmart and Pedrick Produce. I did go into Costco.. We are NOT hoarding but we have stocked up...My go-to goodies are some chips and hersheys chocolate and peanut butter.

In the early afternoon Pat's mother-in-law got to my house where she, Shirley, will live for a while. Shirley's daughter is very sick and in hospice. Her daughter, Eve, is a FIGHTER... and may come out of this on the live side. We all hope. At my house we are being careful for everyone's health. My daughters have expressed their care and concern and love... for me ... as they worry about my introducing this new person, etc... I hope all will be well... And Deanne is helping and advising.

Later in the day we heard from Deanne's brother who is in Cambodia and he is facing difficulties getting back to the US.. though he does like it there. He was going to try to suddenly fly standbye but there was not enough time for him to do all he needed/wanted to do. SO -- he is still there and we will see.

The Virus - Four - Thursday, March 19, 2020

Continuing .... and some say - 18 MONTHS... Wow.

I am following very carefully the social isolation thing. I am either in my house or at Deanne's house or in the car... AND soon, today, I will go out for a walk.

I did talk to neighbor Kend - we talked from our respective sides of the street. And I had a virtual lunch with friend Neal.

I think some people are socializing more now in these early days. For instance the Mens Club at a synagogue had more participants for their lunch and learn today then usual. Some people could come because they were not at work and/or because travel wasn't required. Interesting....!

One thing I feel.. is my butt... I am sitting more as I do things on a screen. A stand-up desk would be nice. I think I will be able to figure something out.

i have not looked at MY accounts for stocks, etc... I don''t think I would sell anything and I don't know what I would buy. Just wait....!!!OY.

Daughters seem ok. I think they are basically not going out... or if they do they are minimizing contacts. I hope so !!! They know what they should do and they are in lock-down areas (Oakland, Walnut Creek, NYC).

As Bill Clinton said, I think, "IT'S THE ECONOMY!" It IS the economy which is VERY PROBLEMATIC. True - health is more urgent but along with issues related to hospital and medical shortages (to come) is the immediate anxieties about the state of the State, the Country, Business.. EMPLOYMENT.... money for essentials - including some fun things, too. We all need to eat, sleep, and be clothed AND we also need fun, too.

While in politics... Sanders still has not dropped out and thus, in my opinion, is crazy. Only crazies try to accomplish that which cannot be accomplished. Some things are unknowns. His chances are not. Worse case scenario... The convention will choose someone other then him. Someone who has clearly seen reality and supported the greater good of the Nation and the Party.  Sanders is, like Trump, and egomaniac.

The VIRUS - Three

I think there is less FEAR at this time and a lot of INCONVENIENCE as well as real concerns about the economy and buying necessities and paying bills. What we need is the great bravery and power of the American People... for GOOD... WE ARE GOOD... and we mean to do good and we do good. Fear not. We are The Home of The Brave !!!

Fear may come soon and combined with hardships associated with the economy will likely lead to ANGER. Let's not go there. Let's go High... Let's go Love.

And -- Last night was another set of results for the Democratic Party. Biden did very well and truly, really, hopefully - Bernie Sanders will drop out of the race so UNITY of the Democrats and UNITY OF THE NATION may be worked towards with passion and urgency. One point of view... is by staying in he can press his agenda forward most strongly. I rather hope viable parts of his agenda are and/or will be incorporated and if he drops out now I think he actually will have more influence as a cooperator/collaborator rather then an outside agitator. Mostly his choice. EGO is the point, it seems. Winning personally may be Sander's more important goal... sadly.

The VIRUS - Two

So -- when was Day One of this crisis and where? China apparently was the place and the earliest cases may have been in late 2019. Certainly in January, 2020 things were happening.

Today more talk out of the White House. Yesterday the stock market essentially crashed and today it is slightly bouncing (Dow dropped just short of 3,000 and now, 10:37am PT - it is up 384).

The country is on shut down in many, many ways. I am 70 years old and I am not going into public spaces and I am doing all the hand-washing I can. I will take a long walk today, weather permitting. I will also try to do more stretching than usual as that is a good thing and easier then doing muscle work (I don't have weights, etc... though in future days I will try push-ups, etc.. - I DO like working out!!!).

There is a lot of economic pain out there!!! Terrible.... I don't know if the powers that be will get this well fixed for PEOPLE! I posted an idea on Facebook and here is what I said:

"An Idea... (what do I know about the economic system?) --- WHAT IF.... All debts and payments were put forward for one or two months? In other words... without even an increase in accrued interest... All credit card and mortgages and rents and car payments needing to be paid this month did not have to be paid until next month? Or two months out if things continue? Banks and landlords and stores would not earn interest or be able to make their payments (landlords would not have to pay on their loans and also taxes)... and much profit - by banks would not be made... BUT - everyone would eventually pay back the principal and un-extra-accrued interest.. when things get set right. It would be as if, for example, the months of April and May didn't happen !!! ... This would help a lot of people though not all. There are those who can't CHARGE things like food to credit cards and something would need to be done for them... BUT COULD SOMETHING LIKE THIS WORK?"

I really don't know if/how this could work. Seems to me possible. Time is time... and we have to get through these times.

The VIRUS crisis - ONE

The following was jotted down yesterday - March 16, 2020:
These special times:
Covid 19... These days are very special. I can't say they are good days yet some say these difficulties will cause some changes our country is in need of. Things such as paid sick leave, health care for all .. to protect us all... Maybe some how we will deal with homelessness. So.. maybe good Will Result!!!

Is this a no pain, no gain thing?? I just hope few people suffer. There has already been many dead and that's very sad. Time for effective treatments and vaccines.

Most people are good

A well known quote:
"Anne Frank. "It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart""

I so believe, too... Or if not good at heart then simply seeking the time and space to be good and successful and creative.

I basically think most people live to establish a home for themselves and their families so that essentials are taken for granted by them and their families so then creativity and luxuries may be pursued and achieved as anyone wants to achieve. In other words - most people want to be safe and content and then pursue passions and uniqueness. 

TRUE - most energy we hear about in the news/social media, etc... is about young people being passionate about social and political issues and older people sitting squarely in the road of what may be progress. There are young people who slog forward and their are old people open to change, too. The exciting drama of the young radicals against the old guard makes us listen with either hope or anxiety while the lives of most people are not soo interesting.

Another quote:
"Henry David Thoreau famously stated in Walden that “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” He thinks misplaced value is the cause: We feel a void in our lives, and we attempt to fill it with things like money, possessions, and accolades. We think these things will make us happy."

We strive.for happiness often! We declare happiness to be our goal and yet happiness is fleeting as is sadness and pain and joy and most emotions! There is an ebb and flow to our feelings with the contrasts highlighting pairs such as happy and sad. The goals, in my opinion, is to notice our feelings and cherish them as they come and go. There are things to do to help us note and accept feelings and situations such as meditation, drugs, mindfulness, friends.... The bottom line is to know your feelings and express them well and effectively so you might get what you want. Remember sometimes you may not know what you really want and what is really good for you.... so notice as you go on and on... What are you feeling!?

How many of us really notice our feelings? How many of us effectively express our feelings? Our wants? Our needs? How many of us know ourselves well enough to be sure our interests in our futures are correct?

We don't even know what is currently really real! The past is obscured by unknowns, too. Why did someone do or not do something? Today with limited information about the past I can't be sure about the present. The future is based on so many unknowns, past and present and future. The future is simply impossible to know.

Most people know the future is uncertain. The degrees of knowing and uncertainty and anxiety differ amongst different people for various reasons. Some people are in despair. Some are surrounded by attractions and distractions that make them happy. Some surroundings cause sadness. People feel differing levels of control over their lives and the lives of others.  Some of us generally feel safe. Some generally live with fear. 

There is, in my opinion and my experience, a continuum for most aspects of life. Most people live along various continuums somewhere in the middle. MOST OF US ARE SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE....  of ??? 

Most people want what is good and best for themselves and for those close to them. The people within that circle of closeness is best when the circle is supportive of all within. The larger the circle the more difficult it is to take care of everyone of that larger group. That is the issue/PROBLEM. There is always a NUMBERS GAME being played and frankly I believe and hope the numbers game and the money part of the numbers game can be rationally won for all!

Go figure -- what numbers motivate what? GREED is absurd. Hording money in vast accounts of hundreds of millions of dollars is not a real goal. A mountain of gold and silver does not make anyone or anything good. Most people know they need a certain number of dollars and they want more for wants. And there is enough GOOD STUFF to go around for everyone. Maybe not a Mercedes for everyone but a good Chevy or Toyota.  Five hundred square feet of living space for an individual may be more or less then wanted but needs for shelter and for clothes and food can be met  if we cut down waste and increase distribution systems.

Most of what needs doing can be done... NOW...

Gentleness is what I would like to see from haves and have-nots. More sharing. Move caring. More love.

Coercion after voting....

Can exit polls be coercive? I can imagine in a small town they could easily be coercive.

Imagine a voting place where 100 people vote. Only one or two vote for a particular party and 98 people vote for the other party. How do you determine who the odd two people were? 

Exit polls could help. Looking people in the eye and reading their look is another way.

How can we combat this possibility the result of which could be shunning of the minority.

Mail-in voting could help if everyone mailed in their ballots and the results were not specific to particular localities.

Any other ideas? Concerns?

This IS important, I think, in these days of great divisivenes.

Conscience and voting and talking

It is the new year... January 1st to be precise and so many of us have had family gatherings and dinners with others who may not share our political views. We were advised to attend these gatherings and not discuss politics for the sake of peace in the house and family. Pretty good advice during these times of heated and angry divisions in out country and in our communities and in our families.

I wonder who was silent while others talked their talk? I wonder and worry that civil discussions did not generally happen (they can be difficult when passions are apparently in play). I wonder how many people bit their tongues and suppressed their anger. More importantly and sadly - how many people listened and listened and found themselves needing to be agreeable in the moment AND THEN will be in agreement later!?

We hear things and find ourselves agreeing with people to keep things civil and peaceful and then later do we live up to those agreements made for the sake of peace in the house? I fear YES -- we find ourselves doing things we essentially agreed to under the duress of needing to be silent.

HOWEVER -- IN THE VOTING BOOTH YOU WILL HAVE PRIVACY AND YOUR ENTITLEMENT AND RIGHT TO THE SECRET BALLOT. And after voting you can be agreeable or you can assert your right to privacy. No one has to reveal how they REALLY voted. The exit poles do not absolutely reflect the actual voting and in fact it might be wise to ban exit poles as they themselves may be viewed as coercive.

There are for some people very important single issues about which they are passionate.Beyond those single issues there are so many other important issues, more and less, to consider when deciding for whom to vote. WHAT IS THE REAL AND RIGHT BALANCE?

In my community Israel is single-issue swaying people. Israel's existence is absolutely right, important, and necessary. For some supporters of Israel there may be secondary issues stated as important, too, that sways them towards one party or another. For me the general social-mindedness of us Jews and our interests in justice is most real. I/We are very concerned about anti-semitism and gender-equality and racial equality and we know what is humanely wrong and right.

SO - love and use The Secret Ballot ... and say what you will or be silent in the face of hate... but vote out hate and vote out prejudice and vote in respect and loving kindness. Show you care!

It is sometimes difficult to talk the talk AND walk the walk. Sometimes is may be easier to walk the walk quietly. Live, work, and vote YOUR CONSCIENCE. Love and care.

Gay people... My history

This is serious ... and there is also lightness in my mind about the "issue" ... and no more will I put that in quotes.

To be sure - I am a solid heterosexual who has always found dating difficult so I understand:

Having said that I remain a simple heterosexual and by simple and solid I mean I never had the feeling for another man to lead me to ask him out. And no one ever asked me out... in fact some folks noted my "aura" or whatever showed me to be a hererosexual.

SO -- my life has included and does include people who are homosexual and herein I want to tell you some of my history with gay people since it may be interesting to someone somewhere.

(btw - spoiler alert -- a crazy idea about labeling is somewhere in this story.... when you get to it know that it has always been viewed by others as crazy, silly, etc)

I grew up in the 50's and 60's and in 1965 was nearly finished with high school.  Amongst my friends were two Michaels. I have not kept track with them since high school so some of what I think could be incorrect. We sang together in chorus (I think both of them did) and one didn't date but did go to many Broadway plays by himself. He, Michael-2, was gay I heard later... and believe to be true. Michael-1 may or may not have been gay but it was him I had an experience when I seriously wondered it he was. So - once we were hanging out, it got late, and I slept over at his house. There was one large bed and we shared it. I remember feeling uncomfortable. I had never before slept in a bed with another peer (I had, when a little kid slept in a bed with my grandmother when she visited). I was uncomfortable because I thought maybe he was gay.... I had no sexual experiences with anyone at that time and nothing happened however I obviously was impressed.

It should be noted I had no idea about homosexuality or any of the issues surrounding homosexuality. I knew nothing about laws or people's assumptions or religion or anything. I look back on that time I must wonder how did I even come to think/feel it was weird to be in a bed with another man? Yet I did!? I wonder?!

Next - flash forward 7 years. During the 7 years I went to college and then enrolled in Library School. I had no experiences I noticed in the gay world. People in those days, I think, were quiet (in the closet?) if they were gay. I felt no vibes from friends or acquaintances and then I found myself without a career or life direction. I worked as a postman and a cab driver in NYC. Then I stopped working and did a little traveling. At the beginning of my travels I visited friends who mentioned the profession of librarian to me and noted, significantly to me, the profession had a lot of women and homosexual men and a heterosexual man such as myself might do very well in that profession (I will not get into the good and bad ideas about these demographics - it was of the times). I have always liked books (for what that was/is worth) and I also enjoyed helping people and I liked learning all kinds of things AND I thought a library job would be great at a college or university since I could there study something else, such as psychology, and move into another profession. As things turned out I spend my life working in libraries and am happy I did.

Flash forward again - this time about two years. Met some people in library school. Met my wife to be. Met a young man who my fiance and I were friends with and who we essentially thought of as either homosexuial or asexual. Upon graduating from library school we were all together one afternoon driving around when this young man came out to us and told us he was having a problem with his family and their views about his boyfriend and maybe he was having some questions about his relationship with his boyfriend and I remember very clearly carrying on the conversation with him about relationships and prejudices and such without direct concerns about homosexuality. To say things differently -- we talked about family and relationships as problems we all have without addressing the "special" issue of homosexuality. I have always thought this was a natural and humane way to talk about and think about issues of personal/intimate relationships.

Note: I have not written or thought much about this scene for a long time. My recollection is that the naturalness of the problems of family and relationships without including the issue of homosexuality was a good thing. We might have talked about homosexualty a bit ... maybe more then a bit... AND now looking back I can think maybe talking about it more might have been a good thing.

Since those days I have worked in libraries and lived in places where generally homosexuality and now LGBT+ people are accepted and issues such as marriage have come a very long positive way and that is good! There are people I know who are gay. There are people I know who are not. I don't know the sexual proclivities of some people. I am still simply a solid heterosexual. The only time I wonder about another person's sexuality is when I am thinking about dating which today I am not doing as I have a wonderful partner.

I look back at My History relative to gay people and see I never questioned by sexuality, I don't recall ever being told to worry about homosexual seductions nor to think about them in any way, AND I had what I would call easy and gentle incremental contacts with homosexuals that I internalized peacefully. And that is my story/history.

A message to my reader: Don't worry. Don't be afraid. Don't hate prejudicially. Be humane. Be accepting. If you can't be accepting then at least be tolerant. Know that life is full of variations in interests, intelligence, understanding, knowledge, spirituality, and more. And know there are TRUTHS... (today, in the Trump era one has to speak about Truths....)

We can all get along together AND in our separate groups/spaces. We have reasons to be separate and distinct and we have some important overarching issues with which we all have problems. Who marries/loves someone might be a way of life that is distinct and separate for some people. Climate change is a worry for us all. Pluralism is the American way and that means groups getting along with other groups for the good of everyone... and The Planet Earth!

SO... in fact a partisan and a patriot can be the same. It is ALL political. With the purpose to have power. Our problem is we have a President who is prejudiced... in so many ways the primary way is he thinks he is all knowing and he knows more than anyone else. He is PRIME... another P. And this country and our world will not have Peace until he is gone.

Simple really... a President and our government is not made up of people who are for themselves first and foremost and that is the Trump way. Our elected officials are our People... and we are their People and it is the People for whom all is meant to be.

Ours is a government of and by and for the people! As said by Abraham Lincoln:

that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom[8]—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

All Americans are The People.

The United States Constitution says:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

President Trump is not one of the people! He is, HE says... better then anyone. HE respects few if any as he has mocked and threatened many so that even Senators fear him.

Fairness
Foul play

Ah... Fear.. We are truly F**k'd with fear. Fear of immigrants. Fear of the truth. Fear of The People who are not us... People living in cities or on farms or other parts of the nation or city. Fear of races and religions.

But WE ARE AMERICANS... and we live in the Home of the Brave. And I hope we will find the courage and bravery to stand up to The BULLY for that is what President Trump is. He bullies and lies and smirks. Do we really want this Bully and Clown anymore?

YES -- rich white males and poor white males seem to find something in Trump they like. They like hearing their darker thoughts spoken out loud... And those dark thoughts are real to them and troubling and FAIRNESS has left the room, so to speak. When the workings of government are halted because it can be done (Speaker of the House blocks for over a year the legitimate nomination of a justice for the Supreme Court)... that is Foul Play. Sure - it was done and thus could be done... and yet it was WRONG...

Fear and Fairness and Foul Play ... can add up to we are simply F**k'd... you know!?

What is Freedom? Freedom is just another word ... for nothing left to lose... and if we do not impeach his aberration to our system... then we will be lost and not free. We will have a lawless dictator whose ethics and morals are truly and absolutely bad, wrong, evil... and we will feel powerless and useless and harmed.

And so on and so aon..

Great America

By Great America I do not mean the amusement parks.... I mean to talk about our wonderful country, The US of A. We were great, we are great... and we will be great because of wonderful citizens and plentiful land and natural resources as well as good fortune. Yes - we are fortunate to have within our borders plenty!

We may lack certain things sometimes. International food distribution means we can have tomatoes all year round. We can get certain precious metals by trading important things such as foods and we have ways of supplying our energy needs both by using carbon-based fuels and renewables.

What we sometimes lack is a certain WILL TO DO... To do what is difficult because economics suggests "easier" ways to get things done. Sometimes that economics is a TRADE WAR.

War ... war, war.... Really? Easy to win? Are there ever winners? Who loses and when? For how long? War is just not really good. Or necessary! Being offensive is considered wrong and the USA is very capable of defending itself!

SO - what is my concern when it comes to GREAT AMERICA? My concern is that SHOULDing other nations is just as bad and non-productive as when any of us tells a friend, spouse, child, etc to do what the SHOULD.... Few of us for only a limited amount of time get to effectively tell another what they should do... A child should not play with fire. A child should get an education. A child should do this and that... but once any child becomes an adult telling them what they should do is less and less likely to get the results appropriate. This is also the case for nations.. especially mature and powerful nations.

Today the USA and China are fighting a war on the economic fronts. Each side wants the other to do this or that. In other words, for instance, the USA thinks China should stop breaching intellectual property rights. China may think the USA should share information freely and transparently. There are other issues... but I think each side has a set of SHOULDS for the other side with the goal of gaining some advantage.

What WE in the USA can do is we can do what we have done best for years -- encourage science and technology and innovation and outside-the-box thinking. Free thinking!

What else we in the USA can do is make living and working in the USA better for all. According to the numbers, i.e. statistics showing how wealth is distributed today compared with the 1950's and other times ... wealth is more concentrated in the hands of a few and less spread around to workers and others.  A taxation system which to some extent leveled the playing field, so to speak, and redistributed some wealth to the poor and disadvantaged has changed. Taxes have fallen for all, perhaps, but mostly for the rich and in many cases where services have diminished for ordinary folks such services are able to be paid for privately and for private purposes by the rich. Consider how the rich can buy the best health care, the best education, and the best police. Yes - private police!!!

America is great when it is great for all or at least most Americans. Most/all Americans need good health care, good education for their children, good policing of their communities.

The way to get what all Americans need is to get the money to pay for all this and that means higher tax receipts and that is most easily affordable by those people making in excess of 500 thousand dollars a year and/or who have assets in excess of 5 million dollars. Don't you think such people can live well with such money and how many of us have close that amount on which to live and eat. There is a lot of excess out there which shared would benefit a lot of people. And that would be GREAT!

Asserting the political MIDDLE... now

I am not personally in The Middle politically. I am to the left of middle. I am not radically to the Left and sometimes my sense of what is best has me looking at the Right. Essentially, however, I do not think either the Left or the Right has the absolutely best answers.

The idea that some group and their position(s) may be ABSOLUTELY the best is where the trouble lies. There are multiple types of people with multiple types of problems and the resulting variety of people and problems means there are multiple ways for problems to be solved.  There may in fact be an infinite variety of solutions! What is good for one person in one situation may be bad for another. One size doesn't fit all - no matter what the labels say!

SO ... in the past our political system, i.e. the Congress, had members in the House of Representative and in the Senate who themselves were of varying types (yes... race and gender differences were not seen/there nevertheless there was variety in places of origin, education, professions, interests, religion, wealth, and personalities!) and when dealing with issues of taxation and education and defense and the post office and welfare, etc, etc.. etc...!!! -- there was a willingness to consider compromise and consensus and essentially SOLUTIONS... to the issues and the questions they raised. There were people on the Left and people on the Right and somewhere in the Middle solutions were found and sometimes the solutions leaned right and sometimes left and sometimes they worked and sometimes they did not work. Trial and error and hope was understood to be the way for all to get a chance!

Something seems different today in the present.

The future comes from the past and the present. At all times, in the past and in the present and in the future The Middle way is a way most and maybe nearly all people can find something useful and important and acceptable and tolerable. Compromise and consensus solutions work for many -- and it was understood solutions might not work for everyone all the time. Frustrations built up! Something better was wanted. Some best, absolutely best solution was wanted. People wanted education and health care for all that was absolutely the best for all. Dramatic news reports of the good and the bad and the ugly were made and consumed because drama grabs our attention.  Drama, however,  is not found in the ORDINARY middle. The statistics showing most people getting good health care and a decent education are dry and uninteresting. Dramas - if positive and wonderful and miraculous left people who only had ok, ordinary experiences wanting more. Dramas showing bad and scary happenings made people think government and experts were not good enough.

However - good enough IS good enough.

While many people except the simple statement -- "life is not fair" I wonder if and when we can understand that the perfect and the absolute generally does not exist. It is something to strive for but not something we generally see or have and if we do achieve some perfection it is fleeting!

I and this essay is good enough I hope to cause you to consider The Middle Ways. YOU are good enough to get the point.

The point is in 2020 we need a new President who will not be perfect and who will try to do the best that can be done and who will succeed sometimes, fail other times, and serve the interests and needs of most Americans. Something in the middle for most! I don't know who that will be.

Donald Trump does not know the Middle Way as he has demonstrated an arrangance of assumed perfection in spite of facts and reality to the contrary of his "facts", etc.. People with open eyes and hearts know truth is real and not what Trump sees.

Do we really want to be lead by someone with NO humility and who only trusts himself while ignoring most (almost all) experts? Chemists and physicists and historians and journalists and poets and businessmen and astronauts and teachers and clergy and doctors and almost all knowledgeable experts with differing views then his are simply called stupid or worse.  Trust IS important and trusting others is necessary unless you are God... and Trump is not God! What kind of person believes others are bad, wrong, evil.. if they differ a lot or even a little from his views? How many of us are like that and are happy and effective? Working and living and growing together with tolerance and acceptance is The Middle Way and is how people relate well over time and space.

The Secret Ballot - REALLY?!

Today reports of loyalty of Jews to the United States was questioned by the President and really the question was about loyalty to That Man... That BOSS... This issue of loyalty arose early in his life and his presidency and was likened to the loyalty oaths of Crime Bosses... Go figure?

Today we have surveys before and after people vote ... asking them who they will vote for and who they have voted for so when the official results come in it is possible to understand something about the voters and the candidates and the issues. In fact the official results are all that are necessary and all that we had for the early years of our democracy and now the additional information seems to be coincident with lower and lower voter turnout. Hmmm???

HOWEVER, to my point - the official results are what matter MOST and the voting we do is a SECRET BALLOT. In this day of privacy issues the secret ballot is important for us to preserve and we should all vote officially while especially not responding to exit polls. Once we have decided and voted ... so be it!

To me it is a no-brainer as to who I will vote for... ANYONE except Donald Trump. The reasons against him in my mind are many and while I have seen some people shrug off this or that because they agree with some narrow, specific issue - if we ignore morality and honesty and truth and justice... then really we are ignoring The American Way. Yes -- that sounds like Superman's motto and he is fictional and not real AND YET ... he was good and meant to be good and tried to be good and that was, is, and may again be: The American Way.

Back to The Secret Ballot --- no one is required to reveal who they voted for and why. We all are entitled to our privacy and personal thoughts. I simply hope - people will be thoughtful and look at the bigger picture then small, special, narrow interests. We CAN BE CONQUERED if we are DIVIDED.

I have thoughts to share in future about The Middle and about BRAVERY... and I think it is time to bravely find and strengthen and hold The Middle.

Death and the death penalty.

THIS IS CURRENTLY, AS OF 8/20/19 -- IN DRAFT ... COMMENTS WELCOME... MY ESSENTIAL THINKING/POSITION IS BELOW AND AT THE LINK NOTED..

Writing and thinking and discussing the issue of Capital Punishment - i.e. The Death Penalty ... is very difficult to do, I find. I have my opinion/position and some very important people in my life do now agree with me. I would like the people in my life to honor my wish that no person be executed for my death... and one response was one I could not agree to... and that was: will you seek the death penalty for me if I am killed? An impasse. One bottom line thought I have is... In the event someone dear to me is killed and in that event if I feel the perpetrator should be executed... I hope SOCIETY will intervene and not kill but imprison for life! That is my wish....

In any case, today I write as a followup to an opinion piece in The New York times (click here) and there you will find usual reasons asserted against capital punishment. Below are some additional thoughts and emotions.

I wonder what moves/guides us when making important decisions or coming to important opinions? When will we celebrate happily after our decisions and actions?  What opinions bring us joy?

I celebrate births. I do not celebrate deaths. I will sing and dance and pray for goodness when a child comes into our world but when someone dies I mourn the loss of a force of life from our world. Joy is part of life and living and death does not add to my joy.

I am moved and guided by facts, experience, ideas, prayer, literature, poetry, music.... Generally, stuff from others. This stuff needs to be considered and my be objective and certainly subject to analysis which could be uncomfortable. Passions, opinions, other personal subjective thoughts move me, too,  and they are often not subjected to objective analysis as they are assumed as they came from my family and culture so they feel warmly comfortable and familiar and may be assumed to be right, based on their source.

Thus we have various ways to understand issues and at some point we decide on some side. I wonder when do we consider changing decisions made once upon a time when those decisions no longer are best? How do we even know they are not the best?

What do we do when facing choices where there is a conflict of truths based on facts versus truths based on feelings? When facts and feelings are in harmony - no problem. When does that happen? I am not talking about "alternative facts" but the disconnect from what we seem to deeply feel and know versus what we don't easily know or feel but which may be a difficult and better truth!

Often the subjective and objective are in conflict and the degree of the disconnect is sadly significant in many areas of life and death. The exception is at the time of death when a person is either still alive or is stone cold dead. No disconnect and no possibility of a correction barring the miracle of resurrection. 

I believe miracles have happened, happen, and will happen. Some miracles are rare such as resurrection and some, such as childbirth, though scientifically true, are seen and felt every day. In fact childbirth is a prime example of the smallest of disconnects between feelings and facts. Subjectively we are amazed and scientifically we understand. Truly wonderful.

For me it is best when my beliefs and science are in harmony. When such harmony is not present I then must choose and when the choice is between life and death I am taught and I believe it is the choice of Life that must be made. The Bible teaches: 

Deuteronomy 30:19
.......I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him......"

I rather bless and be blessed then curse or be cursed. 

When blessed by miracles or facts I celebrate. Childbirth is a time for celebration. What, however, does a celebration of death look like? I really don't know how to happily celebrate the death of anyone - a good person or an evil person. Clearly there has been some curse... a killing! When there is a death - premeditated or accidental - where is the blessing to celebrate? Maybe in some cultures people eat, drink, and are merry as part of their death rituals but I think (hope?) the celebration is about life and the living and not death. Generally death is a matter of griefs and wonderings about what could have, should have... been AND about how important is life and living it fully. 

I guess there are people and times where there is an apparent celebration over the execution of a killer of a loved one. I wonder how the people really feel?  I clearly do not want to suffer the loss that motivates such a celebration and I love celebrations and wish I could join in all the wonderful celebrations of people everywhere but death of a PROBABLE killer is not something I can or should ever celebrate. What if after the celebration it is determined the "killer" was innocent? There are no take-backs when someone is dead.

Racism???

Read a news report about Ibram X. Kendi who won the National Book Award a few years ago for Stamped from the beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America 





He has a new book about how to be anti-racist coming out Tuesday.

The report was in the NY Times and several things caught my attention. One - he taught at the University of Florida and so was a Gator... as is/was Deanne. Second he asserts that no one or thing is a non-racist instead all are either racists or anti-racist. I plan to get a copy of his books and read them and consider such ideas COMING FROM the perspective of things and people being on a CONTINUUM ... In other words -- view ideas and people on a line with one end being ANTI-RACIST and the other end being NON-RACIST.... 

HOWEVER - now that I write it down and as I seek some middle ground of peace and love I wonder ??? What is the appropriate continuum. I DO BELIEVE a continuum is a good model if the points on that continuum include all possibilities as best possible in a one-dimensional plane.

NOW HERE ARE SOME THOUGHTS... ON THE FLY:
SO - for people, ideas, times, etc... the continuum might be: Multi-racial pluralism on one end and Mono-racial purity on the other end. In the middle would be acceptance and tolerance of both extremes with protective rules, laws, customs, etc to ensure peace and equality.

I do need to read more!

Let me say something personal.... Once upon a time I did not think African-American women were pretty, etc... I saw them, the few I saw, as different and not beautiful as I understood beauty. Then I worked in an office with many African-Americans and noticed many different looks AND I got ot know people on a personal level. I saw beauty of various types. I opened to news appreciations. I am better for that awareness I gained in the mid-70's!

Simple little things..

More as time goes on...

The points/issues below are mostly simple, I think, and ESSENTIAL. The Health Care issue may be more complicated but really?? I did see an advertisement against Medicare for All because of costs but really - those numbers can be adjusted so as to get to them with point #5 below - a properly progressive tax so the rich help... Yes - HELP... or pay their fair share ... or whatever you want to call it!

TODAY - 8/5/19
After Shootings in Texas and Ohio
1. background checks for all new sales and transfers of guns, weapons, etc...
2. Easy/quick voting registration and rights for all citizens
3. Raise minimum wage for all to 15 dollars an hour
4. Health care for all -- one way or another!
5. An appropriate Progressive Income Tax system.
